Request for Congressional Oversight of JFK Act

SAMPLE LETTER - Everyone should write one and mail and fax it both ways. We don't need the same massive response to Oliver Stone's JFK movie, but we do need a few hundred serious, well written letters.

Honorable Representative Elija Cummings,

As Chairman of the House Oversight Committee you are in a responsible position that requires you to address many important issues, not only in response to your constituents but in the interests of the entire nation.

One of the most pressing issues that concerns many Americans that falls under your oversight authority are the missing, destroyed and continued with holding of government records on the assassination of President Kennedy, despite the passage of the JFK Act of 1992 that required the release in full of all records on the assassination by October, 2017.

That law, passed unanimously by Congress, was circumvented by President Trump when, on the very last day, he reneged on his repeated promises to release all of the records and instead postponed their full release for years.

The disposition of the JFK assassination records is not a partisan issue, it is supported by liberals and conservatives, right wing and left wing advocates, and the JFK Act was passed without dissent by all Democrats and Republicans alike, all of whom support an open and transparent government and public access to all of the records on the murdered president.

While the assassination took place over a half-century ago, and that may seem a long time, the continued withholding of these records by the President make it relevant today – and despite the Archivist of the United States David Ferraro’s own advocacy of open government, his 2017 recommendations to the President is itself still being withheld.  Since the White House and National Archives and Records Administration refuse to do so, will you please obtain those recommendations and release them to the public?

Most significant however, is the total lack of any Congressional Oversight, as there has not been a  JFK Act oversight hearing in over 20 years, so there has not been any accountability or anyone being held responsible for the many missing, stolen and intentionally destroyed records.

It is only possible for these immediately recognizable historic records to be stolen, go missing, be destroyed or wrongfully withheld because government employees are not being held accountable for their actions, and are acting on behalf of those who are threatened by the full and complete truth about these matters.

Since Congress is required by law to oversee and enforce the JFK Act and hold public hearings on these issues, they eventually will be held, it is only a matter of time. As Chairman, you are the only person capable of scheduling such hearings and I hope you full fill your responsibility to the nation, and to do so soon. Please inform me when such a hearing is scheduled so I can attend.
